A First-Timer's Guide to Sequoia National Park
Sequoia National Park delivers various types of adventures with its towering Sierra redwood trees and large acres. Here's a quick guide for first-timers:
When to Visit
Best Time: June to September for hiking.
Peak Season: July and August– book lodges and campsites in advance.
Spring: Ideal for river rafting; however, most of the higher trails will be snowy.
Winter: Many areas are closed, but the Giant Forest Museum remains open.
How Long to Stay
• Day Trip: Giant Forest—includes the General Sherman Tree.
• Weekend: Crystal Cave Tour and Crescent Meadow or Marble Falls hike
• Week: More remote areas of Mineral King and longer trails
Getting Around
• Public Transportation. Sequoia Shuttle runs from Visalia from mid-July through mid-September.
• Shuttl. Free park shuttles run through Sequoia from late-May to early September.
• Driving: Mineral King is only accessible by driving, and this road also forms a connection with the road to Kings Canyon. Note that it can get quite complicated to park during busy times.
Top Activities
• Hiking:
o Tokopah Falls Trail: This 3.4-mile round-trip trail has granite walls, forests, and waterfalls.
o Moro Rock: Climb 350 steps to the top for panoramic views.
• Stargazing: Take a tour of the night sky with a park ranger at Wuksachi Lodge. Availability is seasonal.
• Unique Experience: Drive through Tunnel Log, a fallen sequoia with a carved tunnel.
