Overview

Perched high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, Machu Picchu is an ancient Incan city that can indeed take one's breath away. This city, including the archaeological site, rises from 2,430 meters or 7,200 ft. above sea level.

Best Time to Visit

Dry Season (May to September): Great weather but crowded.

Shoulder Seasons: April, October. The weather is good, and there are fewer tourists.

Rainy Season: November to March. The scenery will be lush, and there will be fewer visitors; however, the rainier season may make things a little miserable.

How to Reach

1.       Fly into Cusco: Connect from Lima or surrounding nations via domestic or international flights.

2.       By train to Aguas Calientes:

o        PeruRail/Inca Rail: 3.5-4 hours scenic train from Cusco.

3.       Treks:

o        Inca Trail: 4 days trek, by permit only.

o        Salkantay Trek: 5 days trek, a good alternative to the Inca trail, no permit required.

o        Lares Trek: 3-4 days trek, exciting cultural experience.

4.       Bus hike from Agu.

o        Machu Picchu + Machu Picchu Mountain: Only 400 visitors are allowed in the peak every day

2.       Huayna Picchu: It is two-hour intense climb with an amazing view

• Opening Hours: Open from 6:00 in the morning / close at 5:30 \daily.

• What to Wear: Wear comfortable walking shoes, dress in layers, bring a rain jacket and gear, bring protection from the sun, insect repellent, bring a water bottle.

• Currency: Peruvian Sol (PEN). Please carry the local currency to be able to make small purchases.
