Experience Augsburg: Bavaria's Treasure of the Past on the Romantic Road

Augsburg is the third-largest city in Bavaria and the largest on the Romantic Road, but it is also one of the oldest cities in Germany. Founded over 2000 years ago by the stepchildren of Roman Emperor Augustus, it was an independent city-state that thrived from the 13th century and had gotten wealthy due to the textile trade. Banking families, such as the Fuggers and the Welsers, financed whole countries. However, religious conflicts and economic decline since the 16th century led to the city losing its independence, and it has, since 1806, finally become a part of the Kingdom of Bavaria.
